Religion, Politics and the Police….

69238Please go to Crosbie Walsh blog site for the full story. Again, its worth the read.  This is a brief summary of the full story.

The hold that Christianity, in its many forms, has over many ethnic Fijians — and its fusion with Fijian ethnicity and Fijian politics, is difficult for people outside Fiji to appreciate.

It it for this reason — to show how difficult it is for the Bainimarama — or any other religiously-diverse and ethnically-balanced government – to take the country forward, that I have broken a promise to myself. I’m going to publish the latest comments from RawFijiNews, one of the less rational blogsites that invariably mixes religion with its anti-Government politics. And then I’ll look at the equally disturbing “Government” flip side.

Raw Fiji News discussing the Methodist Conference.

Lets do it…its now or never…God bless Fiji. Oh I forgot… I hope they are prepared to shoot ministers, preachers, women and children. When that happens I am coming home to die.”

Teleni’s message

The message to police officers is join the “crusade”– or leave the force. Drink yaqona at home — and start packing. Both edicts must be totally unacceptable to all reasonable people. To ban it (yaqona and alcohol) from police residences is as good as telling police officers they cannot entertain their friends in their own home.

“I want rustlers, cut throats, murderers, bounty hunters, desperados, mugs, pugs, thugs, nitwits, halfwits, dimwits, vipers, snipers, con men, Indian agents, Mexican bandits, muggers, buggerers, bushwhackers, hornswogglers, horse thieves, bull dykes, train robbers, bank robbers, ass-kickers, shirt-kickers and Methodists. ”

I am reading your posts with great pleasure, smart and funny… and this one is a classic!!! keep it up please.

  4. I believe that this is of grave concern; the Police should NOT be doing this. I drove past the park yesterday and it was full of police officers, food stalls, water tanks, busses, government cars, it was staggering to see what has been spent on this event.

WHY ARE THE POLICE NOT OUT ON THE STREETS DOING WHAT THEY DO BEST??

I was once a supporter of this government but not anymore. I cannot stand by and watch religion take over this country. It’s everywhere, and it’s been jammed down the throats of the police force and others.

How can Frank stand by and watch this and do nothing? Are you all blind to what is happening; am I the only sane person left?

This country needs leaders, not religious fanatics. This country needs a vision. This country does NOT need any more religion. FRANK do something before it’s too late!

  5. Churches who claim Exclusivity as the only right true Church, instantly relegates to cult status. But, Pastor Comish Teleni has proceeded to the altar and in penitence his brother Pastor prayed for his forgiveness.

Comish Teleni part, as was counselled by this Church, is repentance; means a 180 degrees turn from is OLD ways or he sins aint forgiven, hence, can not be bestwowed the Pastoral honor of pushing ..opps….praying for people.

..aha…now from this new and highly acclaimed divine stand, Commissioner Teleni would, with powers bestowed upon him by all relevant IG Decree and his belief of his Heavenly mandate via his ordination, proceeds and ARREST BAINIMARAMA , lock him up, complete investigation, throw in jail and GIVE me the key!!…so I could take it to me grandad in Mamuka, Macuata!!

  7. The power-brokers within the Methodist Church need to sit down with the IG and work a way out of the current impasse.

Not having the annual Methodist Conference is financially disastrous, considering the Methodist Church recorded a record loss of over $700K last financial year even after collecting hundreds of thousands of dollars from the faithful. There are those who are adamant that these losses were the direct result of financial mismanagement and theft. Whatever the reason, this year the financial loss will more than double last years with no conference to make up for the shortfall. The future looks bleak for this annual fund-raiser.

As a matter of survival the Methodist church needs to re-think its current strategy in dealing with the IG. If they play hardball, they get nowhere. The government will enforce its emergency decree. If they resort to violence, they turn the whole country and the international community against them.

Time for compromise. The church needs the conference for its survival, the government needs to get its People’s Charter back on track. Surely there can be some middle ground that will avoid unnecessary conflict and be mutually beneficial for everyone.
